Why in news
Authorities in Assam’s Dima Hasao district have started sealing rat-hole coal mines and seizing equipment after a mine flooding on January 6 trapped nine miners.
Four miners’ bodies were recovered by January 10, while five remain missing and untraced.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that 220 rat-hole mines were detected in the Umrangso area, despite a decade-long ban by the National Green Tribunal and Supreme Court.
