Why in news
On January 15, three key platforms will be commissioned into the Indian Navy:
the Scorpene-class submarine Vagsheer,
the stealth destroyer Surat,
the stealth frigate Nilgiri
All platforms were built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. in Mumbai.
While Vagsheer is made under a French license, Nilgiri and Surat are indigenously designed by the Indian Navy.
Nilgiri features advanced stealth technology, reducing radar signatures.
Surat is a major upgrade over previous destroyers, with enhanced design and capabilities.
Both Nilgiri and Surat are equipped with modern sensors and weapons, mostly developed in India or through collaborations with global manufacturers.
The ships are equipped with modern aviation facilities, supporting a range of helicopters.
