Researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) discovered 23 species midges, in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
This study, published in the journal Parasites and Vectors, is the first comprehensive survey of these insects in the region.
What are midges
Midges are tiny blood-sucking insects, closely related to mosquitoes, and belong to the Culicoides genus.
They are also known as bhusi flies in local terms and feed on the blood of livestock (sheep, goats, cattle) and wild animals (deer).
Some species transmit bluetongue disease, which affects livestock, leading to symptoms like fever, blue tongue, and potentially death.
