Why in news
A state of emergency has been declared on Greece’s Santorini and the nearby islands of Ios, Amorgos, and Anafi after a swarm of undersea earthquakes this month
It prompted thousands of people to move to the mainland.
Frequency of quakes has eased, but future tremors remain uncertain
What is an earthquake swarm?
Earthquake Swarm is multiple seismic events with similar intensity hitting a small area in quick succession.
Cause of Activity: Seismic activity linked to the interaction of tectonic and magmatic processes; though magma is affecting tremors, it’s not expected to cause volcanic eruptions.
Swarms in India: Earthquake swarms also reported in peninsular India, where heavy rain increases water pressure in underground rock fractures, potentially triggering swarms.
