India's Fighter Jet Future
Su-57 (Russia) and F-35 (U.S.) displayed at Aero India in Bengaluru, sparking interest in the F-35 for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
U.S. President Trump stated that the U.S. would increase military sales to India and potentially provide F-35 stealth fighters.
There are concerns about how F-35 acquisition might affect India’s own fighter development programs
Challenges:
Integration with India's diverse military systems (Indian, Russian, French, Israeli).
Single-seater design doesn’t align with IAF's preference for twin-seater jets.
Cost and delays: The F-35 program is over-budget and delayed by a decade.
The F-35 comes with stringent U.S. oversight.
Indigenous Programs:
LCA-Mk1A project delayed due to engine issues but expected to resume deliveries in March.
LCA-Mk2 and AMCA (Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft) development in progress.
Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA): A tender for 114 foreign jets to be manufactured in India.
Next Steps: The integration of F-35 into IAF’s long-term plans remains uncertain.
F-35 stealth fighter jets
A tri-service, multinational, single-seat, single-engine strike fighter aircraft expected to be in service well into the 2080s.
It is a fifth generation fighter aircraft.
It is capable of performing a variety of roles, such as- Air combat, ground attack and reconnaissance missions etc.
It has been developed by Lockheed Martin Company.
It has three variants —
F-35A conventional take-off and landing for the Air Force,
F-35B short take-off/vertical landing for the Marine Corps, and
F-35C aircraft carrier variant for the Navy and the Marine Corps.
This aircraft is equipped with stealth technology.
This means that it is hardly caught on radar.
This helps it to deceive the enemy's defensive systems
Modern avionics: It has state-of-the-art communication and surveillance systems, which enable the pilot to make better decisions in battle.
State-of-the-art weapon systems: The F-35 has the ability to load and target a variety of bombs and missiles.
This aircraft is capable of promoting network-based combat strategies, allowing pilots to share quick information with other aircraft and ground control.
