Why in news
Ministers for Higher Education from six states passed a resolution opposing the University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations 2025 and the grading of higher education institutions under the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The states involved are Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Karnataka.
Key Concerns
The states argue that the new draft regulations reflect the BJP-led Union government's ideology and oppose them.
They issued a 15-point resolution calling for the withdrawal of the draft regulations.
UGC's Response
UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar defended the draft, saying the regulations aim to improve standards, ensure a transparent selection process, and maintain autonomy and accountability for institutions.
