Why in news
The Congress opposed the Environment Ministry's decision to approve the reconstruction of the Teesta-3 hydropower project in Sikkim, citing safety concerns.
BJP's Sikkim unit also objected to the decision, demanding a halt to the project clearance until further studies on environmental safety and flood risks were conducted.
The project approval includes stronger safety measures, but concerns about glacial lake risks and flooding persist.
Teesta-3 hydropower project
It is a hydroelectric project built on the Teesta River in Chungthang, Sikkim.
It has an installed capacity of 1,200 MW.
The dam was the highest in Sikkim.
Developed by Teesta Urja Limited.
The glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) that occurred in Sikkim washed away the Teesta-III and caused severe damage to NHPC projects downstream
