Indian scientists on the Aditya-L1 mission observed a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun.
This was done using the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC) instrument, developed by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA).
The observation was unique because the CME occurred without a solar flare.
VELC can observe the sun's corona closer and more frequently than other instruments.
This observation helps scientists understand the magnetic activity that causes flares and CMEs.
The sun is approaching the maximum phase of the current solar cycle 25, so more CMEs are expected.
CMEs are huge eruptions of plasma and magnetic fields from the sun.
Flares are energy releases of electromagnetic radiation.
The relationship between flares and CMEs is still not fully understood.
