The Indian Railways will help with the construction of ponds under the Union government’s Mission Amrit Sarovar to address water scarcity.
Mission Amrit Sarovar was launched in April 2022, aiming to construct or rejuvenate 75 ponds in each district of India.
As of October 2024, over 68,000 ponds have been completed, improving surface and groundwater availability.
Phase 2 of the mission focuses on ensuring water availability with community participation, climate resilience, and ecological balance.
The Railways will assist by desilting, excavating, or constructing new waterbodies near railway lines.
Railway authorities are asked to collaborate with district authorities to identify suitable sites for new waterbodies.
Excavated material will be used for railway embankments where soil quality is suitable for rail construction.
The Railways will coordinate with the Rural Development Ministry.
