Why in news
The Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution asking the Centre to withdraw the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said the Bill affects the religious rights and welfare of Muslim minorities.
The Bill reduces the autonomy of Waqf Boards by transferring the authority to identify Waqf properties from the Board to the government.
All parties, except BJP, supported the resolution; BJP members walked out.
BJP's Vanathi Srinivasan said the Bill addresses irregularities in managing Waqf properties and aims to protect backward Muslim communities.
