He played key roles in major space missions, including BHASKARA-I & II and IRS-1A, India’s early earth observation satellites.
Under his leadership, PSLV was fully operationalised and GSLV had its first successful test flight.
Beyond space, he contributed to national policy — he was part of the Planning Commission
He also led a key committee on the Western Ghats, suggesting a balanced approach to protecting nature while considering the development needs of states like Kerala and Karnataka.
