Coal Dominance in Energy Generation:
Share of coal in total energy generation increased to 79% (16,906 petajoules, PJ) in 2023-24, up two percentage points from the previous year.
Coal has consistently contributed more than 70% of India's total energy since 2014-15.
Coal production increased by 12% in 2023-24, following a 15% growth in 2022-23 (decadal high).
Declining Share of Crude Oil & Natural Gas:
Crude oil's share fell to 6% in 2023-24, down from 11% in 2014-15.
Natural gas share declined to 7%, from 9% in 2014-15.
Limited Growth in Renewable Energy:
Renewable sources (hydro, solar, nuclear, and others) contributed 7% to total energy in 2023-24, up only 1% from 2014-15 (6%).
Share of electricity from renewables has never exceeded 10% in the past decade, despite government efforts.
Import Dependence on Fossil Fuels:
Coal imports accounted for 26% of total coal supply in 2023-24, down from a decadal high of 31% in 2019-20.
Crude oil imports remain high at 89% dependence, with no significant reduction in the past decade
