The Union Cabinet approved the "Modernisation of Command Area Development and Water Management (M-CADWM)" as part of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY).
The initiative has an initial budget of ₹1,600 crore and will run from 2025-26.
Its main goal is to modernise the irrigation infrastructure in India.
It focuses on improving water supply networks to farming clusters from existing canals or other sources.
The scheme aims to help farmers with small land-holdings by increasing water-use efficiency.
Advanced technologies like Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and the Internet of Things (IoT) will be used.
