Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna criticized the frequent conversion of civil disputes into criminal cases in Uttar Pradesh, calling it "absurd."

The issue arose from an appeal by Debu Singh and Deepak Singh, who faced criminal charges like breach of trust and intimidation over a cheque bounce case.
The Supreme Court stayed the criminal proceedings but allowed the cheque bounce case to continue.
The Chief Justice ordered the investigating officer to explain why the case was turned criminal, even suggesting the officer be questioned in court.
The police chief and investigating officer must submit affidavits within two weeks.
