Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Colombo for a weekend trip focused on bilateral talks and signing key agreements with Sri Lanka.
Invited by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, this is the first visit by a foreign head of government since political changes in Sri Lanka last year.
Eight Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed, covering energy, digital infrastructure, health, and defense sectors.
Modi also met with opposition political leaders, including Tamil community representatives.
Key discussion topics included economic cooperation, Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring, Indian investments, and the fisheries conflict between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka’s northern province.
The fisheries issue is significant as Modi planned to visit Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, a coastal town with many bottom trawlers, after his Sri Lanka visit.
