Why in news
The Supreme Court recorded the Centre’s assurance that no Waqf properties will be de-notified or altered until the next hearing on May 5.
No appointments will be made to Waqf Boards or the Central Waqf Council under the amended Waqf Act 2025, which allows non-Muslims to be included.
Any such appointments made in the meantime may be declared void.
The Centre requested time to submit a detailed response on a century of Waqf legislation and public feedback behind the amendments.
The Court refused to stay the Act at this stage, stressing the need to maintain the current situation and avoid judicial overreach.
Chief Justice said the Judiciary will ensure no change that affects rights occurs while the matter is pending.
