A civil disobedience protest intensified in Manipur’s Imphal Valley, with protesters locking Central government offices.
It was triggered by an incident on May 20, where “Manipur State Transport” was covered on a state bus, seen as an insult to Manipur’s identity.
The bus involved was carrying media and officials to the Shirui Lily Festival in a Naga-dominated area.
The Meitei group COCOMI announced the protest after the Governor ignored a 48-hour deadline to apologise.
Protesters carried banners saying “President’s Rule must stop insulting Manipur’s identity.”
President’s Rule has been in place in Manipur since February 13, after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned.
Ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023, killing over 250 people.
