A three-day elephant census was conducted in South Karnataka.
It followed the Interstate Coordination Committee (ICC) guidelines.
The census included three methods: block sampling (day 1), line transect (day 2), and waterhole count (day 3).
Heavy rains affected the waterhole count as elephants had water available elsewhere.
Officials said no elephants were spotted at waterholes due to the rain.
Despite this, data from the first two days remains valuable.
The census was done across South India and involved several tiger reserves and wildlife divisions in Karnataka.
The goal is to assess elephant population trends and help manage rising human-elephant conflicts, especially near Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu borders.
