Why in news
Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, is still waiting for permission to operate in India.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has made new amendments to satellite internet rules (under Unified Licence and GMPCS authorisation).
These changes follow the Pahalgam terror attack, which raised concerns about secure communication.
New rules
Surveillance of users’ web activity, already required for telecom and broadband companies.
Foreign Starlink terminals must be disabled inside India, and Indian terminals must be disabled outside India.
Starlink terminals must be made in India within 5 years.
The purpose of these rules is to prevent cross-border signal use and ensure all satellite communication in India can be monitored and controlled.
