Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called the Indus Waters Treaty a "historic injustice" done to India in 1960.
He blamed the Nehru government for giving 80% of the Indus river’s water to Pakistan and paying ₹83 crore, now worth ₹5,500 crore.
Chouhan said annulling the treaty would benefit Indian farmers by ensuring they get their rightful share of water.
Farmer groups from northern states supported scrapping the treaty and urged the government to use Indus water for Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and J&K.
Bharatiya Kisan Union (Non-Political) stated India has the legal right to end the treaty and welcomed the move for farmers’ welfare and national security.
Chouhan also spoke about spreading awareness of agricultural technology, with 2,170 teams of scientists set to visit villages and train farmers directly.
