Mullaperiyar dam issue
The Supreme Court issued directions to help Tamil Nadu and Kerala resolve issues around the Mullaperiyar dam.
Kerala must forward Tamil Nadu’s request to cut trees near the dam to the Environment Ministry within two weeks; the Centre must decide within three weeks.
The court noted Kerala had allowed material transport for six of nine repairs and saw no reason to block the remaining three.
A Kerala Executive Engineer can be present during Tamil Nadu’s repair work; Tamil Nadu can post its own civil engineer too.
The court asked Tamil Nadu to use eco-friendly materials for road repairs through the forest to address environmental concerns.
Tamil Nadu must complete dormitory repairs and follow legal rules under the Inland Vessels Act and Wildlife Act when using an extra boat.
Both states must consult the Supervisory Committee on grouting work, as expert input is essential to resolve the dispute.
