Vizhinjam International Seaport is a new all-weather port being launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The port aims to become a major maritime transshipment hub for India and South Asia.
It features advanced technology, including an AI-driven control room and Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) developed by IIT-M.
The VTMS helps track ships in real time and optimizes traffic and berthing at the port.
The port will reduce India’s reliance on foreign ports, which currently handle 75% of its transshipment cargo.
This shift is expected to save $200–220 million in lost annual revenue and improve trade efficiency.
The port faced strong opposition from local fishermen supported by a church group during construction.
Despite the protests, Vizhinjam's natural advantages like deep waters and minimal coastal sediment movement make it an ideal location.
