At the BRICS Media and Think Tank Forum in Rio de Janeiro, calls were made for South-South cooperation and the equitable sharing of Artificial Intelligence (AI) benefits.
Concern was raised that the concentration of AI capabilities in a few institutions in a few countries could create dangerous dependencies for Global South nations.
The forum emphasized the importance of cooperation among Global South countries to enable them to play a greater role in shaping AI governance frameworks.
Each country needs 'regulatory autonomy' to formulate its own laws and regulations.
The forum called for developing a multilingual and multimodal corpus to train AI models that cater to the needs of the Global South.
It was also suggested that AI should be used to bring 'Global South Stories' to a wider audience to counter biases in the international media landscape.
A Chinese representative stated that BRICS is not against any country but is a mechanism to ensure equity and justice in international governance.
