അസമിലെ കാസിരംഗ ദേശീയോദ്യാനത്തിലും കടുവാ സങ്കേതത്തിലും (Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve) നടത്തിയ സർവേയിൽ പുൽമേടുകളിൽ വസിക്കുന്ന പക്ഷികളുടെ (grassland bird species) വലിയ വൈവിധ്യം കണ്ടെത്തി.
ഇത്തരത്തിലുള്ള ആദ്യ സർവേയിൽ 43 ഇനം പക്ഷികളെ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തി.
ഇതിൽ ഗുരുതരമായ വംശനാശ ഭീഷണി നേരിടുന്ന (Critically Endangered) Bengal florican, വംശനാശ ഭീഷണി നേരിടുന്ന (Endangered) Finn's weaver, എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.
മറ്റ് 6 ഇനങ്ങൾ 'വംശനാശ ഭീഷണി നേരിടാൻ സാധ്യതയുള്ള' (Vulnerable) വിഭാഗത്തിലാണ്: black-breasted parrotbill, marsh babbler, swamp francolin, Jerdon’s babbler, slender-billed babbler, and bristled grassbird.
പുൽമേടുകളുടെ ആരോഗ്യം സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പ്രധാന പക്ഷിയായ Finn's weaver, ഇവിടെ വിജയകരമായി പ്രജനനം നടത്തുന്നതായി കണ്ടെത്തി.
സർവേയുടെ ഒരു പ്രധാന സവിശേഷത, മനുഷ്യന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യമില്ലാതെ ശബ്ദങ്ങൾ റെക്കോർഡ് ചെയ്യാൻ സഹായിക്കുന്ന passive acoustic recorders എന്ന പുതിയ ഉപകരണം ഉപയോഗിച്ചതാണ്. ഇത് ഒളിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന പക്ഷികളെ പോലും കണ്ടെത്താൻ സഹായിച്ചു.
