മറാഠാ ഭരണാധികാരികളുടെ അതുല്യമായ സൈനിക സംവിധാനത്തെയും കോട്ട നിർമ്മാണ ശൈലിയെയും പ്രതിനിധീകരിക്കുന്ന 'Maratha Military Landscapes'-ന് UNESCO World Heritage List (യുനെസ്കോ ലോക പൈതൃക പട്ടിക) പദവി ലഭിച്ചു.
പാരീസിൽ വെച്ച് നടന്ന ലോക പൈതൃക സമിതിയുടെ (World Heritage Committee - WHC) 47-ാമത് സമ്മേളനത്തിലാണ് ഈ തീരുമാനം കൈക്കൊണ്ടത്.
ഇതൊരു ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ട സ്ഥലമല്ല, മറിച്ച് 12 കോട്ടകൾ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ശൃംഖലയാണ് (serial nomination).
ഈ 12 കോട്ടകൾ: മഹാരാഷ്ട്രയിലെ Salher Fort, Shivneri Fort, Lohgad, Khanderi Fort, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala Fort, Vijay Durg, Sindhudurg എന്നിവയും തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലെ Gingee Fort-ഉം ഇതിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.
