India announced it would upgrade its "technical mission" in Kabul to an embassy, as part of strengthening ties with the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made this significant announcement during the visit of Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi to India.
This is considered a major step towards India granting formal recognition to the Taliban government.
Jaishankar stated that cross-border terrorism is a common challenge faced by both countries, an indirect reference to Pakistan.
India also conveyed its concerns to the Taliban regarding Pakistan's forced repatriation of Afghan refugees.
Both sides discussed cooperation in the health and education sectors, and the potential for Indian investment in Afghanistan's mining sector.
