Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), an NGO, released a report on "Van Rakshaks" (frontline forest staff), who play a crucial role in protecting India's forests and wildlife.
These "Guardians of the wild" work facing significant challenges and threats to their lives.
According to the report, 540 rangers have been killed or injured in the line of duty.
Main challenges faced by Van Rakshaks:
Attacks by wild animals.
Confrontations with poachers.
Mitigating human-wildlife conflict.
Harsh weather and difficult terrain.
Through the Van Rakshak Project (VRP), launched in 2000, WTI provides Van Rakshaks with necessary equipment, training, and accident insurance (Supplementary Accident Assurance Scheme).
