 Institution Deemed to be University

  • The UGC Act 1956 provides for Central Government to declare any institution other than a University to a status of Institution Deemed to be University as if it were a university within the meaning of Section 2(f).

  • Upon declaration, such institution shall be deemed to be a university.

  • They can decide their own syllabus.

  • They can grant diploma or degree to students

  • Full autonomy or independence in deciding courses, syllabus, admissions and fees.

  • Autonomy granted by Department of Higher Education (DHE), MHRD, on the advice of UGC.

  • Examples : Birla Institute of Technology & Science - Rajasthan, Forest Research Institute - Dehradun, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Pusa - New Delhi, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology - Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Kalamandalam, Tata Institute of Social Sciences - Mumbai, Vellore Institute of Technology - Tamil Nadu etc.

Recently in news

  • The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been granted the deemed-to-be university status.

  • NCERT on becoming a research university will offer opportunities for global collaborations and contributions to the global educational landscape.

  • The deemed-to-be university status is on lines of Indian Institute of Science.

  • Jadui Pitara — a play-based learning-teaching material tailored for children in the age group of three to eight years developed by the NCERT.

  • The Jadui Pitara would benefit 10 crore children entering the play-based learning system in anganwadis or pre-primary sections of schools, leading up to Class 2.

  • As 80% of brain development occurs by the age of eight, we need to ensure that content is made and adapted to the mother tongue, otherwise it will be of little use.

  • The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is an autonomous organization.

  • It was set up in 1961 by the Government of India.

  • It aims to assist and advise the Central and State Governments on policies and programs for qualitative improvement in school education.
