The large Avdiivka Coke Plant is located in Avdiivka.
The city had a pre-war population of 31,392 (2022 estimate); in August 2022, its population was estimated at 2,500.
Avdiivka has been at the front lines of the Russo-Ukrainian War since 2015.
It was the site of the 2017 battle of Avdiivka, resulting in destruction in the town.
In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and Avdiivka once again became a major battleground.
