Efforts are being made to expand the cultivation of GI-tagged Onattukara sesame in Alappuzha district of Kerala.

Onattukara sesame

• Onattukara sesame is a unique variety of sesame seeds native to the Onattukara region in Alappuzha district.

•  It is renowned for its distinct flavor, aroma, and high nutritional value. 

• In 2023, Onattukara sesame received the prestigious GI tag, recognizing its unique characteristics and origin.

Characteristics of Onattukara Sesame:

• Distinct Flavor: Onattukara sesame possesses a rich, nutty flavor with a hint of bitterness, making it a prized ingredient in various culinary preparations.

• Enhanced Aroma: The seeds exude a strong, earthy aroma that intensifies when roasted, adding depth and complexity to dishes.

• High Nutritional Value: Onattukara sesame is a rich source of essential nutrients, including protein, healthy fats, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. It is particularly high in vitamin E, an antioxidant that protects cells from damage.

• Medicinal Properties: Traditional Ayurvedic practitioners in the region have long utilized Onattukara sesame oil for its medicinal properties, particularly in treating rheumatism and skin conditions.

GI Tag Means

• A geographical indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin.

• It possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. 

• In other words, a GI is a name or sign that identifies a product as originating in a particular place, where a given quality, essentially attributable to its geographic origin. 

• GIs protect consumers from being misled about the origin of products and also help to promote the production of high-quality products. 

• The World Trade Organization (WTO) also has an agreement on the protection of GIs. 

• The TRIPS Agreement requires WTO members to provide effective protection for GIs. 

• This means that WTO members must take steps to prevent the unauthorized use of GIs and to provide remedies for infringement.
