An airport in Sicily was closed briefly on Friday after Mt. Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, erupted and spewed ash into the sky, disrupting air travel.
Mt. Etna,a soaring 3.3-km-high volcano, has erupted multiple times in recent decades.
Italian authorities also issued a warning for Stromboli, another volcano north of Sicily, whose eruption created ash clouds.
Mt. Stromboli is known for being one of the only nearly constantly active volcanoes in the world.
Mount Etna
Mount Etna, is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, in the Metropolitan City of Catania, between the cities of Messina and Catania.
It is located above the convergent plate margin between the African Plate and the Eurasian Plate
Mount Etna is the highest Mediterranean island mountain and the most active stratovolcano in the world.
The diverse and accessible range of volcanic features such as summit craters, cinder cones, lava flows and the Valle de Bove depression have made the site a prime destination for research and education.
In June 2013, Mount Etna was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Volcanic vortex rings- the phenomenon was more common at Mount Etna than at other volcanoes, and the shape was on account of the geometry of the conduit.
