Dunlin, which is facing threat to its survival, was among the 192 avian species spotted during the recently held Kochi edition of the Kerala Bird Race.
The 2024 Kerala Bird Race recorded a decline in the total number of birds counted, with 4,885 individual birds spotted, almost half the number seen in the previous year.

Dunlin is a small shorebird with a droopy bill.
Dunlin pass over most of the continent on migration
It is commonly found in large flocks on mudflats and beaches.
It has been upgraded to Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List in 2024, previously listed as Least Concern in 2023.
They breed on the Arctic tundra and spend the winter on coastlines in the Northern Hemisphere, usually not found far from the coast.
