Formation of New Counties in Hotan Prefecture
China recently declared the creation of He'an and Hekang counties in Hotan prefecture (part of Xinjiang).
These counties are in the region of Aksai Chin, an area that India claims as part of its Ladakh region but which China controls.
India lodged a “solemn protest,” reiterating that it does not accept China's control over Aksai Chin.
China’s Mega Hydro Power Project
China is building a massive hydroelectric project on the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra), which flows into India as the Brahmaputra River.
India expressed concerns about this project, as it could affect water flow to downstream regions like Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
India highlighted that it has consistently raised concerns over Chinese dam projects and emphasized the need for transparency and consultation with downstream countries.
India’s Stance on Territorial Integrity
India firmly stated that China’s actions will not affect its sovereignty over the disputed areas.
India's position remains that China's territorial claims and occupation in these areas are illegal.
This protest follows diplomatic talks between Ajit Doval (India’s NSA) and Wang Yi (China’s Foreign Minister) aimed at resolving border tensions after the Galwan clashes in 2020.
