India is preparing its first Biannual Transparency Report (BTR) as part of its commitment to the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change.
The BTR will provide India's official position on greenhouse gas emissions, key sectors, energy efficiency improvements, renewable energy transition, and resource availability.
Unlike previous reports, the BTR will be reviewed by independent UNFCCC-accredited experts.
While developed countries were previously required to submit BTRs, all countries began submitting them in 2024.
India's upcoming BTR will include data up to 2022, showing a potential increase in emissions compared to the 2020 report.
India's emissions continue to be around 4-5% of global emissions, with its per-capita emissions being much lower than the global average.
