Paddy, pulses, coarse grains, and oilseeds sowing has increased this kharif season, according to the Agriculture Ministry.
As of May 2, paddy sowing has increased by 3.44 lakh hectares, and pulses sowing by 2.20 lakh hectares compared to last year.
Paddy acreage for 2024-25 is 32.02 lakh hectares, up from 28.57 lakh hectares last year.
Pulses sowing has increased to 20.67 lakh hectares, up from 18.47 lakh hectares in 2023-24, with moong and urad pulses seeing significant growth.
Onion and potato sowing have also increased, with onion sowing up by 2.82 lakh hectares and potato sowing up by 0.47 lakh hectares.
Water storage in reservoirs is better than last year, with 161 reservoirs at 117% of last year's storage levels and 114% of the 10-year average.
Stocks of rice and wheat are above the required buffer standards, with 389.05 lakh tonnes of rice and 177.08 lakh tonnes of wheat.
Wheat harvest in major states is complete, with no impact from the heatwave.
A new campaign will be launched to promote scientific agriculture.
