Quantum Mechanics and Blockchain: The Quest for Truly Random Numbers
UPSC Prelims Subject
Science and Technology (Quantum Technology, Blockchain Technology, Cybersecurity, Encryption).
Key Highlights from the News
Creating truly random numbers required for secure encryption is a significant scientific challenge.
Most existing systems use pseudorandom numbers. If their seed is obtained, the same number sequence can be regenerated. (For example, Cloudflare uses lava lamps to generate random patterns).
Scientists have discovered that the source of true randomness is quantum mechanics.
In a new study, truly random numbers were generated using the quantum property of polarization of photons.
Researchers also integrated blockchain technology into this process to make every step transparent and traceable and certifiable by anyone. This is the first system of its kind.
These numbers are broadcast through a public service called CU Randomness Beacon (CURBy).
