യുഎസ് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ഡൊണാൾഡ് ട്രംപ്, BRICS അംഗരാജ്യങ്ങൾക്കെതിരെ 10% tariff (ഇറക്കുമതി തീരുവ) ചുമത്തുമെന്ന് ഭീഷണിപ്പെടുത്തി.
BRICS കൂട്ടായ്മയെ "anti-American" ആയും യുഎസ് ഡോളറിന്റെ ആധിപത്യത്തിന് ഭീഷണിയായും അദ്ദേഹം കാണുന്നു.
അംഗരാജ്യങ്ങൾക്കിടയിൽ പ്രാദേശിക കറൻസികളിൽ (local currencies) വ്യാപാരം പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കാൻ ലക്ഷ്യമിട്ടുള്ള BRICS-ന്റെ Cross-Border Payments Initiative-നെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ചർച്ചകളാണ് ട്രംപിന്റെ ഭീഷണിക്ക് പ്രധാന കാരണം.

ബ്രസീൽ, റഷ്യ, ഇന്ത്യ, ചൈന, ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്ക എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് പുറമെ ഈജിപ്ത്, എത്യോപ്യ, ഇന്തോനേഷ്യ, ഇറാൻ, യുഎഇ എന്നിവയും ഇപ്പോൾ BRICS-ൽ അംഗങ്ങളാണ്.
BRICS-നെ "അമേരിക്കൻ വിരുദ്ധം" എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനെ ഇന്ത്യ ശക്തമായി എതിർത്തു. ഡോളറിന് പകരമായി മറ്റൊരു കറൻസി കൊണ്ടുവരാൻ ഇന്ത്യക്ക് നയമില്ലെന്നും (no Indian policy to replace the dollar) സർക്കാർ വ്യക്തമാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
